"Made" was written by Nate Hale and Emily Shuler Reed to try to put into song "what were we made for?" and what is our true identity. We wanted to point out the difference between "I am" and "I have" statements and how often we answer the "I am ______" with things that are really "I have" or "I experience". We say, "I am an introvert, I am tall, I am depressed, I am X political party, I am an athlete, I am a musician, I am hungry, I am what I do, etc", but those things can come and go and they aren't really who we are. When Nate was sick with cancer, the chemo killed the nerve endings in his hands and feet so he couldn't play guitar or walk very well. So, what is a musician who can't play their instrument or is too weak to sing? Nothing. For several months Nate needed a wheelchair to get around because he couldn't walk. So, what is an athlete that can't even walk anymore? Nothing. He wasn't even tall anymore because he couldn't stand. It's in times like these that you have to anchor your soul in something that is unshakable. I am loved by the Father, I am chosen for adoption into his family, I am commissioned to sacred things, and nothing can separate me from that love and that family. No matter what the circumstances, no matter how sick you get, no matter if death comes to you, nothing can separate you from the love of the Father.
